A guide and tour of Free Web Pages on the Internet

It all began on one hot afternoon in August 1996 in the Philippines. After holding out for quite sometime, I finally decided to surf the Web in one of the local Internet Cafes near my school. It was an interesting experience. I did some searching using Yahoo! and visited some sites whose URL's I got from some magazines. I remember spending about an equivalent of two dollars for the Internet time browsing through some rules of a card game I was playing back then. At the back of my head I thought: so this is it -- the "information superhighway" -- so what else can I do?

It wasn't a surprise that the next day, I asked a friend exactly that: what else can I find on the Internet? His first (and best) tip for me was to take advantage of the free stuff, which of course to this day remains one of the Web's greatest attractions. He introduced me to what I consider the three pillars of my free web experience: Hotmail, GeoCities and Tripod. Hotmail was great because I got an e-mail address for nothing. GeoCities was also great because I got a web site for nothing. And at that time, Tripod was even better than GeoCities because aside from a nicer URL, they also gave me a free t-shirt. Despite all the other free things available right now, I still use the services of those three web sites, and I always recommend them to a beginner.

The one free thing that always excited me was the free web sites. There are many now -- some are simple but some need a bit of learning. The purpose of this tour is to guide the beginner regarding what is available in certain free offerings and what you can do with them. It is also a good reason to use my free web pages (finally) because I have too many of them now lying around without purpose -- if you know what I mean -- there are just that many out there and I am just too greedy.

At any rate, I hope you like this tour. It covers all the free web sites that I have uncovered to this day and sites that I have successfully found a place in. If you think that a site needs to be included, just drop me a line. I will apply for that one quick.
